The Prophets The Stranger The Lamb |

Good Vs. EvilThe Good Fight Here are some thoughts I have had about Good vs. Evil. The danger in making public such thoughts is inaccuracy due to the weakness of my mind to pull all the thoughts together and cross check them with God's revealed written message to man; the Holy Bible. So, where what I write contradicts what is in the context thereof clearly and plainly written in the Holy Bible, I readily concede. I believe that life is, indeed, a fight between good and evil. I believe good will win. I believe that we must fight evil whether it is in us, among us, around us or opposed to us. I believe that the power to win over evil is not in ourselves but in the God Who created us. By His power and in His way evil will be overcome in His time. We believe the choice to overcome is in the power of each individual. Appropriation of God's power to overcome evil is also an individual choice. The means of appropriating God's power is not a remote mystery but is available to all men and is recorded in the Holy Bible. I believe that the main power of evil is to distort or twist the truth so that what is evil seems good. And we believe that the standard by which good and evil are to be judged, the truth to which it must be compared is the Holy Bible. Even there evil has attempted to distort truth by misrepresentation of what was originally written. "Interpretation" and false "translation" are common tools used here. For the most part, the Bible should be simply read and believed. It is true as was written by the prophet Isaiah near 600 B.C. - Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Isaiah 5:20 What is Truth? The truth does not change. Opposing truth does not make it untruth. Someone might misrepresent the truth by telling only half of the truth. A person's perspective on the truth might make them unable to accurately represent the truth. Nonetheless, the truth is not changed. Truth is absolute and will stand up under scrutiny. The more the truth is investigated, the more strongly the position of truth is affirmed. In the same way, good is not changed by a person's perspective on what is good. Goodness does not change. Either something is good or it is not. Goodness might be misrepresented, nonetheless goodness remains unchanged. What is good will stand up under scrutiny and will stand the test of time. Is There A Standard? Is murder a good thing? Is it good to oppose peace? Is hatred a virtue to be commended? Is impatience a value for which we hold others in high regard? Is he to be respected who holds himself in high regard and disdains others, discriminating against them as lesser beings and trampling the weak? By what scale do we measure such persons and activities? Popular opinion shifts with the seasons as can be demonstrated in Nazi history as well as our own. Is there a standard by which actions and attitudes can be judged? There is! It is the Holy Bible. By it we can know good from evil, right
from wrong. "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against
such there is no law." Ephesians 5:22 The Measuring Stick As for defining evil, the Holy Bible is full of descriptions and lists of things that men do one to another and the consequences of their actions. The Bible has been a guide to man for many centuries. Those who have disregarded it have fallen into the pits described therein. Those who have held it in reverence and heeded the teachings therein have through the centuries reaped the benefits and blessings shown in it. In western cultures we have something we call "common sense." One thing I have discovered in my world travels is that "common sense" is not common to most of the world. Over time I have come to realize that what we call common sense has not always been common to our western cultures and is becoming less common as the years go by. This "common sense" is in reality "Biblical sense" that was common to our culture in history because of the familiarity of our forefathers with the root of that sense: The Holy Bible. Reading through the book Proverbs you will see the thoughts from which many of our cultural "common sense" have their root. Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.Proverbs 17:28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.Proverbs 29:11 A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.
