The Prophets The Stranger The Lamb |
How are NTM missionaries paid? Every NTM missionary is responsible to meet the expenses for his or her own food, lodging, travel, transportation and ministry expenses. Every dime spent comes from gifts. NTM missionaries are able to function primarily through the financial gifts from friends, family and churches who desire to have a part. Personal income and ministry income can become hard to distinguish when most of what you receive barely enables the missionary to stay where he or she is located. So, income available for ministry is that income which is in excess of basic living expenses. What is a faith mission?
Though needs might be made public, NTM as an organization does not solicit funds; especially not through high pressure means where an individual is compelled to give. The departments and ministries within NTM operate in the same way as the missionaries. For example, if an airplane is needed for ministry in a certain country, the missionaries might give gifts from their own support income, churches might give designated gifts toward its purchase, or undesignated gifts given to the aviation department or the mission HQ might be directed toward the project until sufficient income is accumulated to purchase it.
I believe that giving is a privilege granted to Christians as a way of expressing their gratitude to God, to exercise faith in God as our Provider, to be reminded of God's values as opposed to the values of this world, and to align our hearts with God's objectives and purposes for us as His spiritually born-again ones. Some have been given the privilege of giving their lives for God's work, others
give time and money for a small investment with large eternal returns. It's been
said of ministry, "the pay ain't great, but the benefits are out of this world!" 2 Tim. 4:8, 1 Peter 5:4, 1 Cor. 9:14-27
Each family and each ministry is responsible for the finances of his or her work, so each is individually trusting God to provide the financial support needed to do the job. This does not mean that each person is totally on his/her own. It is obvious that God has chosen to use the Church (every Christian) as a body to accomplish His work. Every Christian should be walking by faith, trusting God's direction as to how he or she should be involved in God's work of communicating the message of eternal salvation through faith in Christ to all people everywhere. That means that each supports the other whether by teaching, building, giving, or physical assistance. We work as a team where every person has a part.
Frequently I see needs of missionaries met by the sacrificial giving of other missionaries. While overseas, promised support might not come, or sin in the home church might cause a split leaving the missionaries unsupported, or supporters might move away from the church from which they supported their missionaries. Other circumstances such as a very small home church, or rising costs of living overseas, or unexpected medical expenses, or the needs of the people they serve might tax missionaries' income to where it is difficult to meet needs. We try to help each other. Missionaries are less often supported by the wealthy individuals and churches than by the sacrificial giving of small churches, widows, individuals and families working hard to make ends meet. How true are the words written: "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence." - 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 The task is huge, the needs are great, the laborers are few and the available
resources are limited. It seems often that our individual parts in the work are small. Yet God in His great power accomplishes so much through so little!
